Nearly three decades after Annie Proulx published her short story, Brokeback Mountain continues to challenge American notions of masculinity, class, and love. The Chicago Shakespeare Theater production proves that the narrative does not belong solely to cinematic memory. By bringing the story back to an immediate, live stage, the production restores the danger and vulnerability that made the original work a cultural watershed.
As the Chicago run progresses, conversations about future domestic transfers to Broadway or regional hubs will inevitably follow. Robinson, Butterell, and their lead actors have crafted an uncompromising piece of theater that honors the quiet lives crushed beneath the weight of fear and silence. In the process, they give Ennis and Jack back their grit, their humanity, and their enduring, tragic truth.
