Actors rarely get to play the exact same role in both an international original and its high-budget American recreation. When European or Asian thrillers receive Hollywood treatments, American producers almost always recast the principal roles with domestic stars. The Departed replaced Tony Leung and Andy Lau with Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon; Let Me In recast Swedish leads with American adolescents.

Don Lee broke that mold. The Korean-American actor, who spent his early years training mixed martial arts fighters like Mark Coleman in Ohio before becoming a mega-star in South Korea through Train to Busan and The Outlaws franchise, retains full ownership of his screen presence. He commands an unmistakable physicality: broad shoulders, boxer footwork, and an effortless ability to switch between disarming humor and terrifying violence.

Through his production company, Team Gorilla, Lee negotiated to co-produce the remake alongside Wan. Keeping Lee as the gangster preserves the exact engine that made the original work. His character does not fight with Hollywood martial arts acrobatics; he punches like an anvil dropped from a second-story window. Replicating that specific kinetic weight with any other Hollywood actor would have fundamentally altered the movie's DNA.
