The core culprit during the blackout was a persistent bad gateway error 502 returned by the reverse proxy tier. In web infrastructure, this error code occurs when an edge proxy server attempts to fetch data from an upstream application server or database and receives an invalid, empty, or timed-out response.
Comix relies on a distributed content delivery network (CDN) to serve heavy image files quickly to readers worldwide. During the incident, the CDN edge servers remained online and capable of accepting incoming user traffic. However, the origin servers housing the actual image vaults and user authentication states stopped acknowledging proxy handshakes. When edge nodes failed to establish an origin socket within the designated 30-second window, they terminated the request and returned the generic 502 error to client browsers.
Compounding the problem, the platform database clusters faced severe query locking. As thousands of client devices continuously retried requests through automated background polling, the incoming request volume overwhelmed the gateway ingress controllers, cascading the failure across mirrored backup nodes.
