For decades, the standard path for entering Costco without paying the annual membership fee involved the classic Costco cash card hack. Under company bylaws, anyone carrying a physical shop card issued by an active member can enter a warehouse and make purchases at cash registers. Digital couriers have automated that dynamic for the delivery era.
Platforms like Uber Eats do not require shoppers to register a Costco membership number at checkout. Instead, couriers enter warehouses using corporate commercial access credentials, select items from the aisles, scan them through institutional accounts, and deliver them to your home address. The consumer pays a retail markup, typically 15% to 20% higher than warehouse shelf tags, alongside delivery fees and tips.
That markup has historically discouraged price-sensitive consumers. However, loading an account with pre-discounted vouchers alters the financial balance. When you pay for a marked-up basket using currency purchased at a flat 20% discount, the premium largely dissolves.
