Every standard match takes place on Summoner’s Rift, a symmetrical square battlefield split down the diagonal by a winding river. Each team starts at opposite corners inside their base, which houses the item shop, the respawn platform, and the Nexus. Connecting these bases are three distinct pathways: the top lane, middle lane, and bottom lane. The untamed territory between lanes is known as the jungle.
Matches do not begin with fully equipped warriors. Every player enters the Rift at Level 1 with minimal starting gold and basic abilities. Success hinges on a relentless economic loop: minion farming. Waves of automated foot soldiers spawn periodically from each base and march down the three lanes. Timing the finishing blow on these units, known as "last-hitting", yields gold and experience points. If an ally mistimes the attack, the gold evaporates into thin air.
Gold buys weapons, armor, and utility artifacts at the shop. Experience unlocks and ranks up champion abilities up to Level 18. As champions grow stronger, teams coordinate pushes against defensive fortifications called turret objectives. Turrets hit hard, provide vision, and defend interior territory. Razing enemy towers peels back the fog of war, giving your squad free rein to invade enemy territory, steal neutral camps, and eventually batter down the perimeter inhibs guarding the Nexus.
